Coffee worsens thyroid hypofunction, and this is one of the reasons why some people get fat or cannot lose weight.

According to nutritionist Tiana Fialkova on Facebook, just a few cups of coffee a day (or one can of Red Bull or 0.5 liters of cola) can unbalance the thyroid gland if it is a weak link in the body.

"According to research, excess caffeine reduces the activity of the main thyroid hormone, triiodothyronine (T3). This leads to a gradual slowdown in metabolism. Of course, the initial state of the thyroid gland and the systematic/volume of coffee consumption play a role," she said.

Also, according to Fialkova, caffeine is problematic in another hormonal link.

"Girls prone to estrogen dominance syndrome should pay special attention. Caffeine increases the conversion of testosterone to estrogen in the liver. Drinking 2 cups of coffee a day increases estradiol in the body by 60%," the nutritionist said.

She added that everything is always individual and depends on the initial hormonal background, metabolic rate, weight, liver enzyme reserves for caffeine, liver condition, and genetics.
