For whom and why honey can be dangerous

It is hard to find a healthier and more delicious product than honey. However, this seemingly perfect invention of bees has drawbacks – for some people, it can be harmful.

According to the Bulgarian portal Actualno, honey can cause quite severe inflammation of the digestive tract if a person has digestive problems. Also, honey should not be consumed in certain diseases and conditions.

The article highlights four main reasons why you should refrain from honey or limit its consumption.

Problems with the gastrointestinal tract

The product can be quite uncomfortable for the digestive system. In a person with gastrointestinal problems, excessive consumption of honey can cause severe stomach and/or intestinal pain, as well as diarrhea.

In case of gastrointestinal problems, honey should be consumed no more than two tablespoons per day.

Moreover, honey can be quite toxic to a damaged gastrointestinal tract. It turns out that while collecting honey, bees can collect nectar from "poisonous plants". For example, delphinium and rhododendron. These are poisonous plants, and their pollen can be dangerous.

When buying honey, you should ask where it was collected and find out what plants grow in that area.

Allergic to honey

This product can cause a serious allergic reaction. In this case, the product poses the greatest danger to people who are allergic to pollen.

Experts have noticed that most often a severe allergic reaction occurs when consuming late-summer varieties, while, for example, acacia honey practically does not cause allergies.

Experts recommend that if you have an allergic reaction, pay attention to large honey producers. As a rule, they "clean" it from harmful pollen impurities.

The worst consequences of a honey allergy are anaphylactic shock and laryngeal edema, which, unfortunately, can have the most serious consequences or cause death.

Hypotension.

Hypotensive patients should be careful about consuming honey. In people with low blood pressure, honey can cause a sharp drop in blood pressure, which in turn can provoke a lack of blood supply to the brain. At best, this will manifest itself as a short-term loss of consciousness, which can end up being not so harmless if the person who fell suffers a facial injury or concussion. At worst, an ischemic stroke will develop.

The most dangerous in this case is honey with the addition of valerian pollen.

Experts advise that if a person suffers from low blood pressure but is very fond of honey, they should consume the product in the evening before going to bed.

High sugar levels

When eating honey, remember that it is rich in carbohydrates. People with high blood sugar levels should be careful about consuming it.

People who are overweight should not forget about this, as simple carbohydrates provide additional calories and, as a result, lead to weight gain.

"No matter how healthy honey is, remember that it contains glucose," the article says.

Experts also warned that you should not replace sugar with honey in hot drinks. When heated above 45 degrees, its beneficial properties are reduced to zero – only carbohydrates and sugar remain in honey.
