Chicken is a popular protein product. But in its raw form, it is often contaminated with foodborne bacteria such as salmonella or campylobacter.

The habit of washing it under running water is perhaps the worst thing you can do in the kitchen.

It's such a bad idea that the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK has issued a public warning against the"sanitizing" practice, claiming it can increase the risk of foodborne bacterial poisoning, according to thedailymeal.com.

Before cooking chicken, most people tend to wash it under running water rather than immersing it in the sink or some kind of container. However, splashing water can spread chicken juices onto kitchen surfaces (such as countertops), contaminating dishes or other foods in the area. The droplets can disperse up to 50 centimeters in front of the sink and up to 70 centimeters on each side. If not handled properly, it can not only contaminate the home but also lead to food poisoning.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) does not recommend washing raw chicken. However, it is important to check that it is thoroughly cooked from the inside before eating. To prevent food poisoning from raw or undercooked meat, you should use a special thermometer and make sure it reads 74 °C.

In addition, wash your hands with warm water and soap before and after handling chicken. After cooking, be sure to thoroughly clean the kitchen to prevent the spread of bacteria.
