Food that didn't really exist in the USSR: top 4
There was a shortage of food in the USSR, namely, it was very difficult to buy high-quality hard cheese, fish, seafood, cottage cheese, candy, and high-quality alcohol.
The FoodOboz editorial team shares a list of popular products that were not available in the USSR and were almost impossible to buy.
Fruits and vegetables
In the Soviet Union, there were bananas, oranges, and even simple peaches, but usually there were kilometer-long lines for such fruits every year to celebrate the New Year.
Seafood
There was no fresh or frozen seafood in the USSR, but there were canned crabs, crab sticks, and seaweed.
Chocolate, sweets, canned food, coffee
In the '80s, chocolate was in short supply, and there was a substitute that did not contain natural cocoa and resembled vanilla clay. It is worth noting that there were no candies, cookies, or delicious coffee either.
Wine and beer
It was almost impossible to find good beer, as brewing traditions were destroyed in the post-revolutionary years.
