According to the rules of etiquette, pizza should be eaten with your hands, without using any cutlery. But you have to be able to do it correctly, otherwise, there's a risk of getting contaminated with sauce and other ingredients.

If you just pick up a piece of pizza and try to bite into it, you'll likely end up with salami, peppers, or other ingredients falling onto your plate. In this case, you'll have to pick up your cutlery and finish eating with it, which is not considered good etiquette.

That's why Hanson recommends putting your finger in the middle of the edge and bending it in half before picking up a slice.
