Walnuts are valuable and necessary foods for the body, and can be called a real storehouse of vitamins, minerals and nutrients. They contain a lot of calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, phosphorus and other minerals that the body needs, especially in the fall. In addition, they can be eaten both raw and dried, added to salads, desserts, pies, and made into healthy sweets.

Nutritionist Svitlana Fus shared on Instagram why walnuts are so healthy and how many you should eat per day.

What are the benefits of walnuts

The expert noted that it is best to eat them fresh, not fried, so they will be very useful.

Heat treatment causes most of the nut's beneficial properties to be lost.

Fus added that it is worth buying walnuts only in their shells, as already peeled ones can be oxidized and thus lose most of their beneficial properties and, moreover, lose their pleasant taste.

It is advisable to buy nuts in their shells. Peeled and packaged in bags, they quickly oxidize and taste like rancid oil. They should be consumed peeled and raw to preserve the beneficial fatty acids and vitamin E.

The nutritionist said that it is better to eat nuts without anything – without honey and salt, so they will be most useful.

Salted, and even more so sweetened with sugar or honey, nuts are not the best choice either.

"Some people avoid nuts for fear of gaining weight. Indeed, nuts are a high-calorie food – 690 kcal/100 g," added Fus.

How many nuts should you eat per day

The nutritionist noted that you shouldn't get too carried away with them, since they are quite high-calorie food, you can safely eat a handful a day.

Proof of the benefits is that people who eat a handful of nuts a day have low risks of coronary heart disease, cancer, and a lower risk of premature death

The expert also added that this protective effect of nuts occurs if you consume 20 grams of them per day.

This refers to eating all kinds of nuts, not just one type. This amount does not interfere with your figure, and does not cause heaviness in the stomach.

Fus reminded us that despite all the benefits of nuts, they are also a highly allergenic food.

People who are prone to protein allergies, as well as intolerance to other types of nuts, should be careful. There are contraindications for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, some skin diseases, and thyroid hyperfunction.
