Scientists have called sparkling wine one of the most dangerous alcoholic beverages. It's all about the bubbles that contribute to the rapid penetration of alcohol into the bloodstream: this is what causes rapid intoxication.

According to Live Science, despite the low alcohol content of champagne, it hits the head much harder than wine, which contains the same percentage of alcohol. Scientists attribute the effect of sparkling wine on the body to the fermentation factor and the recipe for the drink.

According to Hildegarde Heymann, a researcher at the University of California, the intoxication effect is present in any carbonated alcoholic beverage: it is the bubbles that help alcohol rapidly penetrate the bloodstream. This is confirmed by several scientific experiments.

To take part in the study, the researchers invited 20 people to try different drinks, both with and without alcohol.

  • In the first case, participants were offered a glass of vodka in its pure form.
  • In the second case, they were offered vodka mixed with water.
  • In the third case, vodka is mixed with the same amount of soda.

Before each session, the participants were advised to refrain from eating at night, and they drank the drinks on an empty stomach the next morning. For four hours, experts measured the concentration of alcohol in the blood using a breathalyzer.

The results showed that carbonated vodka increased the blood alcohol concentration much faster than pure vodka diluted with plain water.
