British chefs have shared life hacks that allow you to cut large quantities of onions without tears.

The main problem is that onions release a substance that irritates the lacrimal glands in the eyes and automatically makes people cry. To avoid this, it is necessary to reduce the amount of these substances.

Journalists of the Express interviewed several chefs, and they shared life hacks that allow them to easily chop a large amount of onions for a particular dish.

So, to cut onions without tears, you need to:

  • Chill the onion. The chemicals that make your eyes water spread more easily when they are warm. Therefore, before cooking, chefs advise keeping onions in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or in the freezer for 10 minutes. The cold will freeze the substance released by the vegetable, thereby reducing its effect on the lacrimal glands.
  • Soak the onion in water. Just cut off the tip of the onion beforehand: the water will draw out the acid that irritates the eyes. However, keep in mind that in this case, you risk depriving the vegetable of its rich flavor.
  • Sharpen the knife. Cooks advise cutting onions only with a very sharp, well-sharpened knife. Blunt knives break the structure of the bulb, and the less the onion breaks when sliced, the less enzyme will be released that irritates the eyes.
  • Ventilate the room. Open windows while chopping onions or turn on a fan. The airflow will blow away the chemical vapors and it will be much easier for your eyes to "breathe".
  • Put on glasses. Yes, there are special glasses for chopping onions. They are usually used by people with very sensitive eyes. And you can do it too.
