Can children eat champignons: an expert dispels myths. Exclusive
Champignons, like every product, have both beneficial and harmful properties. So, many mothers have repeatedly wondered when exactly they can introduce this product to the children's menu.
As it turned out, mushrooms are allowed to be given to children from the beginning of complementary foods, namely from 6 months.
This was written by Victoria Stelmakh, founder of the largest Ukrainian-language Facebook group on complementary foods, and an expert on baby food, in her article for FoodOboz.
According to the expert, champignons are very often used for baby food in many countries around the world. They and other industrial mushrooms are allowed for children from 6 months of age. But it is important not to confuse them with wild or forest mushrooms.
As Victoria Stelmakh reports, researchers have discovered some of the benefits of mushrooms for children and infants. In particular:
- The presence of potassium. The product contains even more potassium than bananas.
- A source of important minerals such as iron, fiber, and selenium.
- A source of useful vitamin D, which helps build strong bones and fight colon cancer.
In general, researchers and natural food experts recommend cooking champignons before eating them. But for them to retain their benefits, the cooking time should not exceed 10-15 minutes.
