8 foods that can be stored without a refrigerator for a long time
Ukrainians have become accustomed to stocking up on food for the future and keeping "emergency kits" in a nearby place. Under the current circumstances, it is very important that they have food that can be stored without a refrigerator for a long time. Maybe these precautions will one day save your life and the lives of your loved ones.
FoodOboz has decided to share a list of products that will definitely not spoil in the near future even without a refrigerator. In some cases, you will need special packaging (polyethylene, containers, cling film, etc.). In addition to having a long shelf life, these products are also quite nutritious.
Top 10 non-perishable foods:
1. White rice
If stored properly, this type of cereal can be suitable for consumption for 30 years. The shelf life of white rice depends on the conditions. For example, the cereal will not spoil if placed in containers without oxygen. Ideally, the temperature should be down to -40 degrees. But in our case (we don't think anyone is going to store rice for decades), it is enough to put the rice in an airtight container.
2. Dried pulses
Dried pulses (beans, peas, lentils) are also ideal foods for storage. Moreover, according to research, even after 30 years, the same beans still contain protein and are quite nutritious. This product can help in situations where physical strength is needed.
You can also put them in a container or any other convenient container in your backpack.
3. Dark chocolate
Although dark chocolate can sometimes become covered with a white coating if it is not stored at a constant temperature, it can remain edible for two years or more. In any case, a bar of this delicacy is better than nothing.
4. Honey
Honey is a versatile, durable product. Some experts even give it the first place among the "most durable". Thus, its shelf life can be measured in decades. Of course, there are conditions for safe storage, namely a closed jar or any other container, darkness, temperature not exceeding 20 degrees (again, if you are not going to carry honey in a backpack for 20 years, this condition can be violated in critical situations).
5. Salt
Salt often helps other products become more durable. For example, lard can be stored in jars for a long time. Salt itself is also almost immortal. The only exception is iodized salt. It can be stored for only five years, but that's still quite a long time.
6. Sugar
The shelf life of refined sugar and regular sugar in bags in heated rooms at a temperature of 25 degrees and 70% humidity is up to 8 years. If it is stored in unheated warehouses, it is up to 5 years.
As for granulated sugar, the shelf life is reduced to two years.
7. Milk powder
This product can be fit for consumption for years. Even if the taste changes over time, this is not so critical. In addition, you can always add something to it, for example, the same honey, which is also stored for a long time.
8. Strong alcohol
The shelf life of vodka, whiskey, and cognac is long enough to keep them in case of an emergency. These drinks can be considered "eternal". They will not spoil, and they will become even tastier over the years. It should be understood that this applies only to high-quality alcoholic beverages.
