The right placement of the carpet in the living room can increase the visual appeal of the room and help to zone the space. It is a comfortable and functional piece of furniture, which, however, can become a breeding ground for bacteria if not properly maintained.

Experts emphasize that there are certain ideas for positioning carpets in the living room, which they often follow when designing a space. How to make the right accents and avoid common mistakes, Homes and Gardens magazine told us.

Tip 1

The first simple rule of living room rug placement that designers often follow is to place them under all the major pieces of furniture in the room.

"Ensure integrity and a well-defined space by placing key pieces, such as sofas and armchairs, on a rug," suggested interior designer Marie Flanigan.

This establishes a visual connection between furniture and flooring, creating a harmonious balance in the living space.

This rule is also followed in her projects by designer Jessica Cinnamon, founder of Jessica Cinnamon Design Inc. She adds that this can work especially well in rooms with an irregular shape to help ground the space.

Tip 2

Although in some rooms, especially in small living rooms, it may not be possible to completely place furniture on top of the carpet, experts advise always making sure that the front of sofas and armchairs are above the carpet.

"To achieve a balanced aesthetic, it is important to make sure that the front legs of the sofa are always on the carpet. This simple rule not only anchors the seating area, but also creates a coherent visual connection between the carpet and the largest piece of furniture in the room," said Evgenia Triandos, chief designer at Hibou Design & Co.

Tip 3

Choosing a central location for the rug in accordance with the built-in architectural details is one of the rules that designers often use.

"Centering the rug on large architectural elements, such as a fireplace or window, will help achieve a sense of balance around these key areas," explained interior designer Brandon Lange.

Rugs don't necessarily have to be centered under furniture, but instead, if placed correctly, they can define the desired zoning function of a room.

Tip 4

The next life hack is to "align" the carpet and the sofa. This means that no matter how big your carpet is, the sofa should be placed in the center.

Tip 5

Finally, it is important to consider how placing a rug in the living room can improve the functionality of the room.

Think about making sure your rug fits the space perfectly and doesn't block the passageways in the room. Start by determining which "tracks" are typically used as aisles so that the rug separates seating areas.
