Unpretentious and colorful: what flowers to choose for spring flower beds

Cockerels fill your garden with colors and shapes

In the spring, after the lingering gray, you want a wealth of colors and shapes of flowers. And you don't want to put much effort into planting and caring for them.

In this case, the perfect choice would be irises, also known as irises. The plant got its name from the Greek word Iris, which means rainbow - even wild flowers amazed with their richness of color. And when breeders got down to business, about 300 species of the plant appeared to suit every taste. OBOZ.UA tells you how to choose and plant irises to enjoy the flowers both in spring and summer.

What are the types of irises

Plants of the cockscomb family easily cross with each other, which gives a huge scope for creating new species. And it's not just about the colors of the flowers, which can range from snowy white to almost black purple, but also about their shape.

There are species with smooth petals and those with curly ones. Bearded cockerels have a strip of thick villi at the base of the lower petals that form a decorative "beard". Those that do not have this beard are called beardless.

There are also many dwarf species - they do well in cold climates. The early species are called reticulated. Depending on the variety, cockerels can be either short or very tall - up to 70 cm in height.

How to plant and care for cockerels

You can plant cockerels in the open ground from early spring to autumn. But it is worth keeping in mind that beardless species do not tolerate overdrying of the roots, so they need mulching.

In the spring, these flowers are planted when night frosts stop - the bulbs (or, in some species, tubers) take root in well-warmed soil. In warmer regions, the season for planting cockerels begins at the end of March, while in colder regions it is better to wait until April.

The soil in the flowerbed allocated for the cockerels should be loosened beforehand. It is also important to provide the plants with protection from the wind, which can be too cold in spring.

In the fall, flowers are planted until the temperature drops below 10 degrees. It is better to do it even earlier - the plant should have time to take root.

During the period of budding, it is important to water the iris regularly. They need constant moisture at this time. Then you can focus on drying out the soil.
