You've probably noticed small bags with transparent balls in your new shoe boxes. And you probably threw them away right away. Silica gel has unknowingly created a bad reputation for itself, and these sachets are often perceived as ordinary garbage.

Silica gel is a useful and non-toxic product. The experts of the House digest publication told us where these small sachets can be useful.

Where silica gel can be used

Silica gel acts as a desiccant and absorbs moisture around it. This is why they are worth saving for use in damp areas, such as the bathroom. The product will also help get rid of mold odors. Place the containers of sachets out of the reach of children to reduce excess moisture.

Since it is a very porous substance, it is able to absorb moisture or water. This is why silicon-based cat litter will also help reduce condensation. Water molecules stick to the surface of the gel balls. In addition, silica gel can actually re-release moisture if it is stored at too high a temperature (over 65 °C).

Absorbent small balls can absorb up to 40% or 50% of their weight, depending on the humidity and temperature of the room.

After use, the silica gel will not be indicative, meaning it will not change color after saturation, but you can also purchase indicative silica gel that changes color as it absorbs water.

How to store silica gel safely

Silica gel sachets should be stored in an airtight bag or container, either unopened or in packages. It is important that they are not exposed to moisture until you are ready to use them for their intended purpose.

Keep silica gel away from pets and children. Although it is non-toxic, consuming the balls can lead to stomach pain. Side effects of consuming silica balls include nausea and vomiting.

To effectively dry silica balls, it is recommended to place them on a baking sheet in an oven at 120 °C for 90 minutes.
