Simone Biles' hairstyle at 2024 Olympics causes controversy online: what's wrong with it and what the gymnast says
American gymnast Simone Biles, who won a gold medal for her country at the 2024 Olympic Games, has spoken out about criticism of her hairstyle online. Internet users made comments about her short hair sticking out of buns and ponytails and called for her to have it pinned up.
People writes that the athlete recorded several videos on Instagram Stories, where she explained that people mostly criticize her because of her dark skin. It's worth noting that black Americans tend to have porous curly hair, so in order to put it in a classic bun or ponytail, you have to straighten it beforehand.
As Simone noted in her video message, at the time of the recording, she was sitting on a bus with no air conditioning and 35 degree heatwave, which significantly affects the condition of her hair. "Don't address me because of my hair. It was done, but there is no air conditioning in the bus, and it's like 90,000 degrees," the athlete addressed her followers.
She shamed those who criticized her and warned them not to comment on her hair anymore, "The next time you want to comment on a black woman's hair, just don't."
On the eve of the 2024 Olympic Games, she told Elle magazine that she has accepted her hair as it is naturally, so she no longer worries about random statements. "I used to be worried that my hair would be considered unprofessional, but now it doesn't bother me anymore," the gymnast said, adding, "I'm finally learning to love my hair, the texture I have, and the styles I can do.
Simone Biles used to complain about damaged hair due to constant buns and ponytails. The restoration process took some time, so she has no desire to ruin it again.
As she performed the routine that won the U.S. the gold medal and made Simone Biles the most decorated American gymnast in Olympic history, she had a bun with hair sticking out of it, which many people disliked.
