Never do this: makeup artists reveal beauty mistakes that age you
Have you ever wondered if the way you do your makeup is aging you? Maybe you like bright colors of cosmetics or avoid using creamy products because you thought they would look too greasy?
Makeup artists told MailOnline what beauty mistakes can make you look older. And they revealed the secrets of what to do instead and what cosmetics and habits to avoid.
Give up heavy makeup
Makeup artist Nydia Figueroa suggested that older women use tinted moisturizers with a broad spectrum of action from transparent to medium coverage that do not emphasize the texture for skin care.
Another makeup artist from New York, Drita Paljevic, said that the biggest mistake she has noticed is using and applying a lot of makeup, which leads to it looking messy. Instead, she recommends preparing and moisturizing your skin according to your skin type and using makeup with the idea of "less is more". In her opinion, heavy foundation should be replaced with a transparent one, and it should be applied only where necessary.
"The key to youthful skin is a glow and matte or powder finishes take that away. Heavy foundations can accent fine lines and wrinkles very easily," she says.
Rose-Marie Swift, the legendary celebrity makeup artist, prefers a tinted moisturizer or a light foundation applied with a wet sponge.
Ditch powder for cream
You might think it's better to avoid cream-based products as you age, but these makeup artists say it's actually best to use them for a healthy glow.
"Avoid using too many powder products, as this type of finish tends to accentuate fine lines. Cream and liquid products are best for mature skin, which will give you a dewy finish that is on trend right now," explains Drita.
Makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift says that skin becomes drier with age, so cream-based products are a must for mature skin.
"Creams give the added hydration and, when applied minimally, can knock years off the age of the skin. Mature women need moisture and dewiness always, because healthy, hydrated skin is beautiful skin," she clarifies, adding that blush should also be cream-based.
Open your eyes
Nydia Figueroa believes that wearing artificial eyelashes is one of the biggest mistakes older women could make. She explains that while eyelashes are a great way to open up the eye, if you choose false eyelashes that are too heavy or long, they will add to your age.
Another way to open the eyes is to avoid cold shades or use them in moderation. Instead, the makeup artist suggests using a matte shade on the inner corners of the eyes to open them without exaggeration.
Rose-Marie Swift also believes that heavy eyelashes age women because they look fake and will only make your eyelids look heavier.
"If you’re using fake lashes, it’s best to apply lashes that are not on a strip. Get a more realistic looking pair of lashes, cut them into sections, and apply those sections individually," she advises.
Keep your eyebrows thick
Celebrity eyebrow specialist Joey Healy from New York said that too thin brows can be misleading - they are often thought to lift, but in fact, thin brows can add age.
"As we get older, brows tend to thin, particularly at the front and on the tails, and they may turn gray or white, which can create a sparse, patchy appearance," he explained and added that keeping eyebrows thick gives a youthful feel, just as a little blush gives a natural, youthful flush to mature skin.
